Sorority Recruitment

  • Am I The Greek Type?

There is a place for everyone in the Greek system. UL Lafayette is home to a uniquely diverse Greek society. There is no model Greek. Learn more about being Greek at the National Sorority Life Web Site. Parents can learn more about sorority life on the National Panhellenic Conference Parents information page or the frequently asked questions page.  Also you can join the UL Sorority Recruitment 2010 page on Facebook.

Will Being Greek Affect My Grades and how important are grades?

That all depends on you. The Greek system at UL Lafayette has a higher average GPA than that of the undergraduate student body. All of the Greek Organizations at UL Lafayette have a scholarship program available to their members. Scholarship is the most significant factor in sorority selection and membership. GPA requirements are derived from either your high school or college grades. Please note the minimum GPA required by any

Panhellenic group on the UL Lafayette campus for a high school or college student is a 2.5. However, some groups have higher GPA requirements. Any potential new member must understand the strong emphasis placed by the individual chapters regarding academics. Click here for the spring 2010 fraternity and sorority chapter grades. . Below is a listing of the minimum GPA requirements for the UL Lafayette chapters:

    Will I be hazed?

Hazing is absolutely forbidden. You don't have to prove anything to others. Each organization does have expectations of membership though. During the time that you are considering joining a sorority, be sure to ask pointed questions about the expectations of new members. If you do join an organization, and feel something is not right, contact a Greek Dean in the Dean of Students Office or the national organization to which the local chapter is affiliated. All UL student organizations, including Greek organizations must follow the UL Lafayette Alcohol and Drug Policy and Anti Hazing Policy.

Where will I stay during recruitment?

If you are living on campus, you may move into your residence hall on Sunday August 15th. Legacy Park residents will be able to move in on August 13th or 14th.  If you are living off campus check with your apartment complex about an early move in day because you are participating in UL formal recruitment.  Be sure to do this early.

How much time does a sorority take?

This depends upon your willingness to get involved and make a difference. Like any organization, the sorority will have general expectations of you. Most importantly, you will be expected to attend meetings and events. Through your sorority involvement, you'll learn to manage your time and balance your academic load, work, and social commitments.

What is a recommendation (rec) and am I required to get recommendations?

A recommendation is a letter that is written on your behalf that speaks of your character, accomplishments, grades, and activities from a woman who has already been in that particular sorority. Therefore, it is beneficial to have someone that you know write these.

Letters of Recommendation are not required to go through recruitment at UL Lafayette.  It is the responsibility of the individual sorority to secure recommendations.  Each national sorority has its own guidelines and recommendation forms that its alumna members must use. The UL Panhellenic Council does not provide these forms. If an alumna is not familiar with her own sorority’s regulations, she should contact her inter/national sorority. The information will probably be available in her inter/national magazine or on the sorority’s website.   UL Panhellenic does not set a deadline for their submission.  They should probably be in by the first week of August for the sororities to consider properly before recruitment starts.

All Recommendation forms or letters should be sent directly from the alumna to the address noted below for each chapter: (Please note on envelope that Formal Recruitment Letter of Rec enclosed).
